Abstract

Even today, the prevailing opinion is that the famous Greek philosopher Diogenes lived in a barrel, and that comfortably, as you will be able to read, but not see. It was one of his notable protests against luxury. It was found, however, that older foreign translators from Latin did not know exactly what the word dolium meant, so they translated the term as barrel, thinking that the Romans built rafts in the First Punic War (250 BC), in the absence of suitable ships. from barrels (= dolid), with which they transferred the conquered elephants across the Strait of Messina (Frontinus, Stratagemata, I 7, 1; Pliny, HN 8, 16).
