Prof. Svend Hansen

Professor Hansen is a prehistoric archaeologist and since 2003 Director of the Eurasia Department of the German Archaeological Institute. Since 2004, he has been an Honorary Professor at the Freie Universität Berlin. From 2011 to 2013, he served as Acting Director of the Römisch-Germanische Kommission of the German Archaeological Institute in Frankfurt am Main. From 2001 to 2003, he was Senior Lecturer (Hochschuldozent) at the Institute of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archaeology, Ruhr University Bochum, where he had previously worked as Assistant Professor (1995–2001) and Scientific Associate (1994–1995. He finished his doctoral studies at the Free University Berlin 1991.

Professor Hansen's academic focus is the study of cultural development during the Neolithic and Copper Age in Eurasia. In this domain, he has authored and edited numerous scholarly works and directed several major archaeological excavations.

Professor Hansen is a full member of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI), a International Member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina (2023), a Founding Member of the Académie Internationale de Pré- et Protohistoire (2022), and a Corresponding Member of the Hungarian Society for Archaeology and Art History (2022). He is also an Honorary Member of the “Vasile Pârvan” Institute of Archaeology in Bucharest (2020) and the Institute of Archaeology in Iași (2016), and a Foreign Member of the Romanian Academy (2016).
